There are few musical experiences more liberating than hitting the open road with nowhere to be but the next freewheeling adventure. Keith Fiala captures that magical carefree spirit on “Road Trippin’,” an exuberant jazz fusion celebration that transforms real-life miles, shared memories and infectious grooves into four minutes of pure summer exhilaration.

Inspired by two unforgettable journeys Fiala and his girlfriend, French horn player Brenda Muhlenkamp, took while balancing life on the road—including performances with legendary trumpeter Arturo Sandoval—the single captures the sun soaked optimism of a seasonal getaway  without relying on sentimentality. Instead, it channels those experiences into an irresistible groove that feels equally at home on the dance floor, a coastal highway or a late-night drive beneath endless open skies.

After a brief shimmer of atmospheric soundscaping, the track bursts to life with a muscular rhythm section and a punchy horn arrangement whose infectious energy immediately recalls the classic funk sophistication of Tower of Power. Rather than placing the spotlight exclusively on his trumpet, Fiala wisely lets the full horn section establish the song’s personality before stepping forward with a warm, confident melodic statement that blends swagger with melodic finesse. His phrasing is conversational and inviting, moving naturally between tightly focused hooks and freer improvisational flights that keep the performance fresh from beginning to end.

The production continually introduces playful surprises. Brenda’s cheerful invitation, “Let’s go road trippin’,” floats across the groove like a friend calling everyone into the car, while spoken vocal snippets add a whimsical sense of departure, momentum and anticipation. Spacey synth textures, jangling rhythm guitar and crisp percussion create a colorful backdrop that gives the arrangement a distinctly retro flavor while maintaining thoroughly contemporary polish.

One of the single’s greatest strengths is its keen, seamless sense of ensemble. Tenor saxophonist Brian J. Gardner, trombonist Jeff Freeman and the surrounding horn textures generate tremendous forward motion, but perhaps the most electrifying moment belongs to guest guitarist Billy Denk. Best known in recent years for his expressive ambient recordings, Denk unleashes a fiery solo that propels the music into high powered, almost surreal jazz-rock territory. His imaginative lines, soaring bends and flashes of dazzling technique inject another burst of adrenaline before handing the spotlight back to Fiala for an energetic closing stretch where trumpet and horn section engage in an animated musical exchange.

Fiala brings decades of experience to every phrase he plays. A longtime member of Sandoval’s touring organization as both performer and road manager, he has also shared stages with an extraordinary roster of jazz luminaries, including Maynard Ferguson, Gordon Goodwin, Wayne Bergeron, Randy Brecker, Brian Lynch, Allen Vizzutti, Bill Watrous and Tom “Bones” Malone, among many others. Beyond the concert stage, he has earned equal respect as an educator, clinician and author, helping shape generations of brass players through his teaching and acclaimed instructional books. That remarkable résumé could easily inspire a display of virtuosity for its own sake, yet on “Road Trippin’” Fiala chooses something far more engaging—using his formidable technique in service of melody, groove and the sheer joy of making music.

What makes “Road Trippin’” especially appealing is that its backstory never overwhelms the music itself. Knowing the composition grew from shared adventures between two working musicians certainly enriches the listening experience, yet the tune succeeds because it communicates those feelings without explanation. Its buoyant rhythms, memorable melodic hooks and joyful interplay capture the unmistakable sense of freedom that comes from discovering new places—and enjoying every mile of the unpredictable journey.

Unleashing “Road Trippin’” in the middle of summer, Fiala gifts us with killer vibes and an important reminder that that virtuosic musicianship can translate to unabashed fun.  Brimming with personality, high-spirited performances and feel-good energy, this standout Wayfarer Records release is the perfect soundtrack for endless sunny days that listeners will happily revisit long after the road home has ended.
